Your Home After Sunset: Why the Light You Use Matters

Your Home After Sunset: Why the Light You Use Matters

A simple guide to flicker, colour temperature, amber and red light — and creating a home that feels better from morning to night.

If you've spent much time in homes in Costa Rica, you've probably seen it: beautiful tropical surroundings, warm wood, natural textures — and very bright, cool blue-white LED bulbs overhead.

They're practical. They're efficient. But they can also make an otherwise inviting home feel surprisingly sterile.

Lighting affects much more than how a room looks. Light is one of the environmental signals our bodies use to understand what time of day it is. And just as the natural light outside changes from morning to afternoon to sunset, the lighting inside our homes can change too.

The goal isn't to make your home dark.

It's to use the right light at the right time.

Start With the Daytime

During the day, we want light.

Open the curtains. Let natural light into the house. Spend time outside when you can — something we're fortunate to have plenty of here in Costa Rica.

Inside, take a look at the bulbs in your home. Many houses here use very cool, blue-toned LEDs. They can be extremely harsh and give rooms an almost commercial or clinical feeling.

Simply changing those bulbs can transform a space.

For daytime areas where you want clear, functional lighting, consider moving away from very blue "cool white" bulbs toward a more natural daylight or neutral light.

The room can still feel bright and fresh without feeling sterile.

Then Let Your House Change With the Evening

Outside, light doesn't stay the same all day.

As the sun gets lower, daylight becomes softer and warmer. After sunset, our homes can follow that same transition.

Instead of keeping every bright overhead light on until bedtime, start lowering the overall amount of light in the house.

Turn off some overhead fixtures.

Use lamps instead.

Choose warmer bulbs.

And create smaller pools of light exactly where you need them.

It makes a remarkable difference to both the feeling of the house and your evening environment.

The Bedside Lamp Might Be One of the Easiest Changes

One of our favourite simple upgrades is a small bedside or side-table lamp with a low, warm light source.

Use it during the last part of the evening instead of illuminating the entire bedroom with an overhead fixture.

A bedside lamp with amber lighting can give you enough light to read, get ready for bed or move around the room while keeping the environment much softer.

The same idea works beautifully elsewhere in the house.

A small lamp beside the sofa. A warm lamp on a console. Low lighting in the bathroom. A small light in the kitchen instead of every ceiling fixture.

You don't necessarily need more lighting.

Sometimes you simply need better-placed lighting.

Why Amber and Red Light?

Our circadian system responds differently to different wavelengths and intensities of light.

Blue-enriched light is an important part of daytime light and helps signal daytime to the body. That's one reason getting natural daylight during the day is so valuable.

At night, however, we don't necessarily want to continue sending the same bright daytime signal.

This is where warmer lighting becomes useful.

Amber light can be a practical choice for normal evening life. It creates a warm atmosphere while still providing useful illumination for reading, talking, preparing for bed or relaxing.

Red light can be useful when you want even less short-wavelength light — for example beside the bed, as a nightlight or when getting up during the night.

It doesn't mean your entire home needs to glow red every evening.

Think of it as another tool.

What About LED Flicker?

Colour isn't the only consideration when choosing a light.

Some LED lights rapidly fluctuate in brightness because of the way their electronics regulate power. The fluctuation can happen quickly enough that you may not consciously see it.

This is commonly referred to as flicker.

Not every LED behaves the same way, and some people are more sensitive to flicker than others. Choosing well-designed, low-flicker lighting is another factor worth considering when creating a comfortable home environment.

A Simple Lighting Rhythm for Your Home

You don't need to turn lighting into another complicated wellness routine.

Keep it simple.

Morning Open the curtains and get natural outdoor light when possible.

Daytime Let the house be bright. Use natural daylight and comfortable neutral/daylight lighting where additional illumination is needed.

Late afternoon Allow the house to naturally become a little softer as the sun goes down.

After sunset Reduce bright overhead lighting and begin using warmer lamps and lower-level lighting.

Before bed Use dim amber lighting or red light where practical, particularly in the bedroom.

The result isn't just a more circadian-conscious home.

It is often a much more beautiful home.

From Cool and Sterile to Warm and Inviting

Lighting is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to completely change how a room feels.

If your home is currently filled with very cool, blue-white bulbs, you don't have to replace everything at once.

Start with the rooms you use most.

Change the harshest bulbs.

Add a small bedside lamp.

Create a warm evening corner in the living room.

Try amber lighting in the bedroom.

And pay attention to how the space feels.

Small changes can make a surprisingly big difference.
